What better way to immerse yourself in the historical events of Athlone than to spend the day at Athlone Castle. The exhibitions are fantastic, interactive, rich in history, accurately curated, and incredibly informative. This renovated 13th-century Norman castle is located in the heart of the Midlands, on the west bank of the river Shannon. Enjoy a self-guided tour through the castle, take your time walking through the exhibition rooms, engage with the interactive displays, soak up the amazing views from the top of the castle, and enjoy a drink and a bite to eat at the café. They offer eight exhibition rooms, with each room designed to tell a different story about the siege of Athlone, the battles that were overcome, and to remember and signify the milestones over the past century. The staff are welcoming and knowledgeable about the strategic importance of the artefacts and displays throughout the ages. A must visit!
