It is so worthwhile taking an outing to this small castle in Drimnagh, Dublin. Drimnagh Castle is a beautiful stone building with all the romance and intriguing history that one would expect from a medieval wonder. It is also the only moated castle left in Ireland, and is sought after and featured in many films and also for historic events. Originally built as a fortification in the mid-13th century, the main structure dates back to the early 15thC and has been added onto through history. There are fascinating tours available featuring a “Murder Hole” and secret passageways… to whet your appetite with a snippet. The splendid gardens (especially wonderful in full bloom in summer) are open to the public at no charge, although a donation towards upkeep is always appreciated. The best part is that this castle is available for hire for weddings and other events.
