Enniscoe House

Accommodation

Hidden among the woods at the foot of Mount Nephin is Enniscoe House, “the last Great House of North Mayo”. Enter through the white gates, go past the pink gate lodge and follow the long winding avenue through extensive parkland, to arrive at the classical Georgian family home of Susan and DJ Kellett, where stunning views of Lough Conn greet you. The family portraits, antique furniture, open fires, good food and wine all contribute to the pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. The six guest bedrooms, all with private bathrooms, are luxurious and spacious and some offer wonderful views of the lake and parkland. Enniscoe House offers Bed & Breakfast, and dinner, accommodation between the 1st April and the end of October.

Foxford

Foxford Woollen Mill is a perennial favourite in my Top 100 Attractions on the Island of Ireland book, and with good reason, I’ve endorsed it twice already. Established in 1892, this Mayo icon has delivered craftsmanship and innovation for over 130 years, never standing still while others tread water.

Smack in the heart of Crossmolina, The Old Post Office delivers the kind of feel-good food that matches the town’s famously warm welcome. Recommended to me by Gill’s Courtyard Accommodation, also endorsed in this chapter, it’s the definitive breakfast stop.
