Felin Uchaf Centre
The Felin Uchaf Centre is a social enterprise on the Llŷn Peninsula that provides training courses and volunteering opportunities specialising in traditional and eco-skills from thatching to wooden boatbuilding. In addition to running short skills courses: they host an exciting year-round programme of cultural events, storywalks and nature activities; enabling people to enjoy the rich variety of ancient sites and wildlife areas on the surrounding peninsula - from breakfast walks in the spring woods to sunset suppers and stories on the Iron Age Hill forts. Visitors to the 23 acre centre can walk around the footpaths and watch the ongoing eco-building projects, enjoy a picnic in the community gardens and visit the farm shop for organic veg and fine woodcrafts. A Centre for Living Arts & Science is opening soon, crafted of local natural materials such as oak and straw bale and built by trainees and volunteers it will host an eco-visitor centre, exhibition gallery and organic café.
Review
At Top 100 Attractions we are not only impressed by visitor numbers, and size of facilities, we judge all of our attractions on mainly visitor experience and value for money. The Felin Uchaf Centre, here on the Llŷn Peninsula has both of the aforementioned qualities in abundance. Hundreds of volunteers from all over the world have dedicated thousands hours toward creating a whole range of traditionally inspired buildings using locally sourced natural materials from thatched Celtic roundhouses to a mediaeval barn and boatbuilding workshop. A magical event that happens here, is the programme of fire-lit storytelling evenings that take place regularly throughout summer in the subterranean earth-house. This attraction couldn't be in anyway better placed, for the Llŷn Peninsula is steeped in ancient history, and thanks to this centre's founder, Dafydd Davies-Hughes, Celtic roundhouses can be seen. on this beautiful part of the Welsh coast.
