Oxford Castle Unlocked

For the first time in 1000 years, the secrets of Oxford Castle have been Unlocked revealing episodes of violence, executions, great escapes, betrayal and even romance. Walk through these ancient buildings and experience the stories that connect the real people to these extraordinary events.

Experience the austere confines of the 18th-century Debtor's tower and Prison D-wing, and the dark atmosphere of the 900-year old underground Crypt; marvel at the Mound of the 11th-century motte and bailey castle with vaulted well chamber; climb the Norman St George's Tower, now open for the first time in its history, and enjoy its stunning 360° panoramic views over Oxford.

Visit Oxford Castle and uncover the secrets for yourself!

Tours leave every 20 minutes from the admissions area in the Gift Shop. Tours last 40 minutes with one of our experienced costumed guides. After this time you are able to explore the Prison Wing and the wider castle site in your own time.

We have hundreds of castles to visit within Britain, we also have some old jails to cure our curiosity. But when you visit Oxford Castle Unlocked you've got the best of both worlds. With costumed actors and tour guides you will get an accurate picture of just how life was within these once grim walls. I have visited the castle twice now, and on both occasions been shown round by a totally different character, such is the diversity of this attraction. You get attractions that are great for adults and then there are attractions that are specifically aimed at younger audiences, but Oxford Castle Unlocked, in my opinion is attractive for every member of the family. Just in the castles courtyard they have a great coffee shop with fabulous coffee, and believe me, when it comes too coffee I'm hard too please!
