The Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum, is located in Gloucester's Historic Docks reopened in April 2014 after a Heritage Lottery funded refurbishment. Come and discover the lives of Gloucestershire soldiers from the last 300 years. Try on Army uniforms, walk into a First World War trench, learn about medals and how soldiers won them through history with our digital interactives. Do you know how the Gloucestershire Regiment won the Back Badge? See how the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars survived fighting in the desert? Have you felt how heavy a Rifleman's rucksack is? With changing exhibitions and our Soldiers of the Month display, there is always something new to see. There is plenty for the whole family to do, childrens games, uniforms to try on plus a free quiz. The museum covers from 1694 through the Nepolionic, Worlds Wars, Korea through to modern day conflicts, to interest school study to military buffs. The museum has a brilliant shop selling a huge selection of military books, memorabilia through to gifts, postcards and childrens souvenirs. Complete your visit with a hot drink and cake or ice-cream, in the tearoom with seating inside and out, with views of the pretty docks. Museum offers group discount and is accessible to all with a lift and baby changing facilities.
We within the Top 100 Attractions range of books we feature many museums big and small, and on a broad range of subjects. The soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum fits in quite nicely alongside any one of those museums. Having just completed a huge transformation, this museum has got some great collections spanning many centuries of military history in and around the subject of the Gloucestershire regiment and the many wars they have fought in. We have taken for granted over hundreds of years the luxury of having a huge and world famous army, but very little is known about the many lives that this army holds. Here at the Soldiers of Gloucestershire museum you get a behind the scenes glimpse of life within one of the countries most respected regiments and the perils they face daily to secure our safety. A visit here was a huge pleasure and one I would recommend to anyone.
