On entering the building, you will be transported back in time and meet face to face with some of the most notorious characters to have walked the floors of this dramatic and history filled building. As you travel back in time, you are entering one of the cruellest, most historically shameful places in Ireland.

Wicklow Gaol was one of those attractions that totally took me by surprise. I arrived at the gates of this haunting looking building, thinking I was just going to look around a museum about a historic Irish jail. After leaving the reception area I was guided into the prisoner waiting room by a prison jailer from a by gone age. Before being shown to what could well of been my cell, I was given a guided tour around the whole of the prison where I was to be serving out my sentence. I found the tour to be very informative and entertaining and with all of the jail employees being in costume it added to the whole prison experience. I found the prison tour to be excellent value for money, and the tearoom at the end of the tour served an excellent selection of home cooked food and cakes.
